Floor & Decor expert shares why tile is becoming a defining surface in homes

With National Tile Day falling on Feb. 23, it’s a timely moment to look at how tile is shaping home design right now. Tile remains the No. 1 surface for bathrooms, patios, and kitchen and bath walls, but its role has evolved.
Today, tile is setting the tone of entire rooms, bringing warmth, texture, and continuity across kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas, rather than serving as a simple finishing touch, said Ashley Biscan, Interior Design & Trend Expert at Floor & Decor.
“Tile is a material made for self-expression,” she explained. “We’re seeing tile used more intentionally to define spaces, anchor color palettes, and introduce personality through material, scale, and form. From patterns and colors to sizes and textures, custom looks are at your fingertips without a high cost.”
Tile helps a space tell its story, she continued. Through unique craftsmanship and colorways, tile adds to an eclectic touch with applications on floors, walls, and even furniture.
“Tile often sets the stage for multiple layers of design elements and styles,” Biscan noted. For example, checkerboard tile packs a punch in traditional and whimsical spaces, she said.
