Update with new photos: The creative marble summer “White Carrara” is taking place for the 9th time (through September 28, 2025)

New artistic works by renowned Italian and international designers will be the focus of the 9th edition of “White Carrara” from 13 June to 28 September 2025. Throughout the summer, the historic center of the city will be transformed into an open-air exhibition space and creative workshop celebrating its world-famous material through exhibitions, installations, lectures, events, and guided tours.
With this event, the region wants to bring itself and its important natural stone resource back into the spotlight. In addition, the aim is also to create a new common sense within the stone sector and between the companies and the citizens: “An event that, through the combination of design and marble, leads to a union … and the revival of (the) local identity”, according to the press release.
Carrara used to be the global center not only of the marble world, but of the stone sector as a whole. After the year 2000, however, the business model of processing raw blocks (including those imported from other countries) and exporting them as finished products went to new players such as China.
At the same time, the Marmotech trade fair in Carrara lost its importance to Marmomac in Verona, and the IMM Carrara association disintegrated.
The artistic workshops in the region have relatively well survived the crisis.
Now, “White Carrara” is back for its 9th edition. The selected designers have created new objects, which are realized in cooperation with local companies and exhibited on the streets and squares of the city. Last year, the focus was on works from the past under the motto “Design is back.”
The MudaC│museo delle arti is hosting the exhibition “Vincenzo Marsiglia. Stars and Dust” about innovation, mixed reality, and artificial intelligence. In the “Uninverso” project space, artist Gianluca Sgherri constructs a dynamic labyrinth that challenges conventional perceptions of space.
New this year is the international White Carrara Award. The competition is aimed at designers under the age of 35 but is also open to established professionals and is looking for innovative ideas for street furniture made of marble. The prize-winning works should be completed by May 2026 and then remain permanently in the city.
White Carrara is organized by the city in collaboration with Internazionale Marmi e Macchine CarraraFiere SpA (IMM) and the Chamber of Commerce Toscana Nord-Ovest. The event is sponsored by the Tuscany Region, with support from the Fondazione Marmo and technical assistance from Nausicaa spa and ERP Massa Carrara spa. The Association of Industrial Designers ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale) also supports the initiative.
For the 2nd time in a row, Domenico Raimondi from the creative workshop thesignlab is the artistic director.
We show the designers’ drafts in the order in which the organizer sent them to us.
